MPC Endowment Ltd.

Overview

The MPC Endowment was established by members of the Milwaukee Press Club in 1973 to promote journalism excellence.

The endowment carries out its mission by providing annual scholarships to journalism students and by supporting activities of the Milwaukee Press Club that promote excellence in journalism.

The MPC Endowment Ltd. is a 501(c)(3) Wisconsin-registered non-stock corporation. It is run by an elected board of directors that includes a president, vice president, treasurer, secretary and five directors. Board members are elected by Milwaukee Press Club members but operate independently of the club and maintain separate finances.

The endowment supports:

Scholarships — Each year the club provides scholarship money to Marquette University, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. At each of those schools, representatives select a student to receive the scholarship. The Marquette scholarship is named the Ray Kenney Scholarship in honor of the late, former Milwaukee Sentinel business editor. The UW-Milwaukee scholarship is named the Albert and Francie Silverman Scholarship.  The late Mr. Silverman, a businessman, was a strong supporter of the Milwaukee Press Club. The UW-Madison scholarship is not named.

The Endowment also provides grants to journalism programs in public and private high schools within the City of Milwaukee.  See the application form at the bottom of this page.

Wisconsin Excellence in Journalism Contest —

The endowment has long supported the annual Wisconsin Excellence in Journalism competition, which the club started in 1930. The contest is open to all newspapers, radio stations, television stations and web news media in Wisconsin. There are professional and collegiate divisions of the contest. Awards are presented at the annual Gridiron Banquet, which the endowment has financially supported over the years.

Milwaukee Media Hall of Fame —

Because the Milwaukee Media Hall of Fame highlights excellence in journalism, the endowment has been a sponsor of this Press Club event.

As of December, 2011, the MPC Endowment had assets of approximately $124,000. A portion of the funds are managed by the Greater Milwaukee Foundation. Funds come from donations made by individuals and from the proceeds of Milwaukee Press Club events.
