Award winning author to discuss changing face of newspapers
MILWAUKEE, WI—April 1, 2008. The Milwaukee Press Club and UW Milwaukee’s Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists are hosting an event for best-selling author and journalist Michele Weldon who will speak about her new book and the changing world of journalism.
This event will take place from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 10, at the Newsroom Pub, 137 E. Wells Street, in downtown Milwaukee. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.
"Everyman News: the Changing American Front Page" studies the shift towards feature articles over hard news stories. It discusses in detail the “narrative niche” found in newspapers today, reflecting society’s fascination with more humanized stories. The book includes over 50 interviews that begin to explain the change in media that now includes “blogs, citizen journalism and newsroom diversity.” Weldon’s interviews provide insight to the fast-paced world of today’s media.
Weldon is an award-winning journalist for magazines and newspapers for over 25 years. She is a best-selling author of two previous books. In June and October, 2002, her nonfiction memoir and second book were featured on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” She’s also been a guest on “NBC’s Later Today,” “ABC Sunday Morning” and BBC-TV.
As a freelancer, she’s written hard news stories, columns, features and editorials for newspapers such as the Chicago Tribune and the Los Angeles Times. Her work has been published in magazines Seventeen, Writer’s Digest and Women’s Day.
Weldon has won various awards including the Rainbow House Individual Courage Award, the Women’s Peacepower Award, two awards from the Illinois Women’s Press Association.
Weldon is an assistant professor at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. She received both her graduate and undergraduate degrees in journalism from Northwestern University. She lives in Chicago with her three sons.
