MARQUETTE UNIVERSITY
HOSTS NATIONAL PRESS CLUB
FORUM
ON JOURNALISM’S FUTURE AND VALUES
WASHINGTON – The National Press Club, the
world’s leading professional organization for journalists, and Marquette
University in Milwaukee are teaming up to look at the future of the news media
and how to protect its core values.
The Oct. 30 event will begin at 7:00 p.m.
in Straz Hall, 606 N. 13th
St., Room 105.
This event is free and open to the public. Parking is available in Structure
2, 1240 W. Wells St.
This NPC Centennial Forum on The First
Amendment, Freedom of the Press and the Future of Journalism will feature
leading Milwaukee
journalists:
Marty Kaiser, editor and senior vice president,
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel;
Lori Waldon, news director of WISN-TV;
Jeff Mayers, president and editor of
WisPolitics.com; and
Bonnie Brennen,
Nieman Chair, Marquette University
The panel will be moderated by Gil
Klein, a veteran national correspondent, former National Press Club president
and director of the Club’s Centennial Forums program.
“In these tumultuous times for journalism,
the National Press Club is pleased to work with Marquette
University to bring a forum on this
important topic to Milwaukee,”
said Club president Sylvia Smith.
“The Diederich College of Communication at Marquette University is often the site of
important discussions about the role media play in our society,” said Dr.
William Thorn, chair of the Department of Journalism. “This forum offers another
opportunity for our students, faculty, the media and the public to examine the
changes facing the media and how that may impact our profession and our
lives.”
This forum, which is being co-sponsored by
the Milwaukee Press Club, is part of a nationwide conversation the National
Press Club is holding during its 100th anniversary to look at where
the news business is going and what news consumers should be demanding.
Schedules and video highlights of forums in other states can be found on the
Club’s Web site: www.press.org.
The next event will be on Nov. 6 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The event begins with a preview of the Club’s centennial
documentary, “The National Press Club: A Century of Headlines,” which follows
the history of American journalism through the lens of one of its leading
institutions. Everyone who attends this forum will get a copy of the
documentary.
The NPC Centennial Forums program is
sponsored by Aviva USA,
one of the nation’s fastest-growing life insurers (www.AvivaUSA.com). In addition, the company
is funding the production and distribution of 12,000 DVD copies of the “The
Century of Headlines” documentary and supplemental education materials.
Tom Godlasky, chief executive officer of
Aviva North America, said, “Our partnership with the National Press Club is
based on shared values and a belief that the First Amendment, freedom of speech
and professional journalism are fundamental to democracy, personal freedom and
free enterprise.”
