Winner to be announced at January 26 event

MILWAUKEE - Did you know that Milwaukee is home to the oldest continuously operating Press Club in North America?  If not, get ready to learn more about the history of your city and its media legacy as the Milwaukee Press Club celebrates its 125th anniversary  at this year's annual City Birthday Party.  The Press Club will be unveiling an online trivia contest on January 11 that will lead up to the annual City of Milwaukee Birthday Party, to be held January 26, 2010 at the Milwaukee Art Museum.

"Amid all therecent changes to the media industry, we feel this is an important opportunity to look back at the events and media milestones that have shaped the history of Milwaukee and to celebrate the history of journalism in our city," said Jim Nelson, president of The Milwaukee Press Club and deputy business editor of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

The online trivia contest, developed with assistance from Milwaukee historian John Gurda and members of the Milwaukee Press Club board, will include questions regarding historical milestones, events and personalities that have shaped the Milwaukee media industry, our city, and the world's view of it.  In addition to complementary food and beverages, live local music and giveaways, party guests will also be able to listen to a short historical presentation by Gurda at the event.

Those interested in attending or learning more about the Press Club can register immediately and view official contest rules and entry instructions after January 11 on the Milwaukee Press Club Web site: www.milwaukeepressclub.org.

"For more than a century, the media has played a critical role in communicating with the public, both locally and nationally," said Nelson.  "Milwaukee has a strong, proud media history, and this year's City Birthday Party will celebrate that role."

The trivia contest winner's name will be announced by Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett at the event, to be hosted by the Press Club from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Milwaukee Art Museum, 700 N. Art Museum Drive. Admission is $25.

Dating back to 1885, the Milwaukee Press Club is the oldest continuously operating press club in North America.  It currently has more than 300 members, representing a diverse community of media-focused professionals representing nearly every local media outlet, and with a strong constituency of public relations and marketing professionals and individuals with an interest in the press.
